Choosing The Right UL Location Rating (Damp or Wet) Could Be Critical To Your Safety and Well Being by Frank Grobmeier

When it comes to selecting LED fixtures for your project, it’s of paramount importance to consider the level of protection you need based on your environment. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has established two different ratings for LED fixtures: UL damp and UL wet rating.

UL damp-rated LED fixtures are designed for use in areas that are occasionally exposed to moisture, but not typically submerged or exposed to direct rainfall. Examples of these areas include covered outdoor areas, covered patios and porches, bathrooms outside of a shower stall, and areas near indoor swimming pools. Areas that have high humidity, but no direct exposure to moisture may also be an area where a damp rated fixture may suffice.

On the other hand, UL wet-rated LED fixtures are designed for use in areas where they will be exposed to direct rainfall and other extreme environmental conditions. Examples of these areas include outdoor sign lighting, fountains and swimming pools, landscape lighting and well lights, and indoor applications such as shower stalls. The main difference between these two ratings lies in the level of protection they offer against moisture and exposure to liquids. While UL damp-rated fixtures usually feature a sealed design to protect against damp conditions, wet-rated fixtures are designed with a higher level of sealing to prevent any water or moisture from penetrating the fixture and damaging the LED components. Additionally, UL wet-rated LED fixtures must be installed with a ground wire that connects to a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) to protect against electrical shock hazards.

It is important to note that using the wrong type of LED fixture in wet or damp environments can cause damage to your fixtures, pose safety hazards, and reduce the lifespan of your LEDs. Lighting fixtures use electrical currents for power. Water serves as a conductor. When water encounters electricity it can cause electrocution or fire. So, when you are selecting LED fixtures, it is crucial to consider the level of protection you need based on the environment they will be installed in. UL damp-rated fixtures are suitable for areas exposed to occasional moisture, while UL wet-rated fixtures are necessary for areas exposed to direct rainfall and other extreme weather conditions. Take the time to properly assess your needs and choose the appropriate LED fixtures to ensure their durability and longevity.
